Kick Spring Allergies To The Curb
Spring can be such a beautiful time! The sun shines a little bit brighter each day, the grass is getting greener, and flowers are starting to bloom! Unfortunately, seasonal allergies dominate this time of year. Cue the sniffles, itchy eyes, and sneezing for many of us! The FDA reports that over 36 million of us suffer from seasonal allergies. We all know that April showers bring May flowers, but somehow we find out that allergy season is back the hard way. Find some relief from the bothersome allergies with a few tips below!
Temporarily Avoid Opening Windows
This is one of the most difficult to do. After being cooped up for so long one of the things we long for most is some FRESH air! Especially given the startling statistic that indoor air quality is usually 2-5 times more polluted than outdoor air. Unfortunately for those suffering from seasonal allergies, opening your windows is an invitation for pollen and allergens to enter. And there is only so much your heating and cooling system can filter out! Try to open your windows when the pollen count in your area is low. You can check this on most weather apps or websites below the forecast.
Leave Pollen Outside
Where it belongs! Pollen clings to our hair, skin, and clothing. If you’re spending lots of time outdoors, make sure you change your clothes and take a shower before lounging around your home. Pets included! Pet dander alone is enough to trigger allergies, but think about how many times our pets roll around outside! With each wag of their tail, pollen is flung throughout the air in your home!
Install HEPA Filters
We’ve talked about the importance of changing your air filters at least monthly, and it’s even more important in the Spring if you suffer from allergies. HEPA filters stand for High-Efficiency Particulate Air [filter]. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, HEPA filters can remove 99.97% of dust, pollen, mold, bacteria, and any other airborne particles as small as .3 microns. If you are constantly losing the battle with seasonal allergies, consider investing in a HEPA Filter for your home heating and cooling system!
Dehumidify
Mites and mold thrive in a humid environment, and they could be worsening or even causing your allergies! Dark areas, like basements, are more susceptible since they are oftentimes unused and out of direct sunlight. A dehumidifier could work in your favor since mold can cause just as much irritation as your allergies! Dehumidifiers work by drawing the moisture out of areas within your home and can prevent the spread of mold in those unused areas. When you can remove the moisture from that warm, humid summer air, you will immediately feel the difference in your indoor air quality.
