Electrical Safety at Home

Electricity plays a big role in our daily lives. Whether we are watching TV, powering our heating and cooling system, or charging devices, we constantly use it. In celebration of Electrical Safety Month, we are taking some time to dive into the world of electricity. Homes today simply aren’t built like they used to be! They have more electrical needs than they did in the past, so making sure your electrical panel and fixtures are up to date and have the capacity to power your home is important. But, just how important?

According to the Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI), home electrical fires account for an estimated 51,000 fires each year, nearly more than 500 deaths, more than 1,400 injuries, and $1.3 billion in property damage. Electrical safety is real, and this month we’re dedicating our blogs to discussing all things electrical. Get ready for some static conversation!

What is Electrical Safety Month, Anyway?

As the name implies, Electrical Safety Month is dedicated to discussing electrical safety throughout May each year. Having a basic understanding of electrical safety measures in your home is important for ensuring the safety of you and your family. Whether you are just renting or you own your home, electrical safety should be a top priority!

Startling Statistics

If the statistics we mentioned above weren’t shocking enough, here are a couple more to highlight the importance of electrical safety. According to the ESFI:

  • Electrical distribution systems are the third leading cause of home structure fires.
  • The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) reports that electrical receptacles are involved in 5,300 fires every year, causing 40 deaths and more than 100 consumer injuries
  • Sixty-five percent of home fire deaths result from fires in homes with no working smoke detectors.
  • Roughly 3,300 home fires originate in extension cords each year, killing 50 people and injuring 270 more.
